Ethereum layer-2 network built by Coinbase and opened to the public in August 2023, running as an optimistic rollup that posts its data to Ethereum; L2Beat put the value it secures at $11.58bn in July 2026. Coinbase reported that Base carried 62% of global onchain stablecoin transaction volume in the first quarter of 2026, more than every other chain combined, and Base itself puts stablecoin volume for 2025 at more than $17tn across 26 local currencies and 17 countries. On 18 February 2026 it said it would leave Optimism's OP Stack for a single Base-managed repository, roughly doubling its upgrade cadence to about six releases a year, and on 8 July 2026 it activated the B20 standard for issuing stablecoins and other real-world assets at the chain level.
