State Street to launch tokenized fund servicing from Luxembourg
State Street announced on 28 April 2026 that it would launch tokenized fund servicing from Luxembourg, initially for tokenized money market fund issuers, later in 2026. The custodian said it is building a single operating platform for tokenized and traditional funds rather than a separate system.
What happened
State Street said it would service tokenized funds domiciled in Luxembourg, starting with tokenized money market funds, with the service expected to be available later in 2026. The bank framed the approach as extending its existing fund accounting, transfer agency and custody platform to handle token registers alongside conventional share registers, rather than operating a parallel digital-assets business. Luxembourg's choice as the launch domicile reflects its position as the main European centre for cross-border fund distribution and its blockchain legislation permitting share registers to be maintained on distributed ledgers. Ledger Insights reported in July 2026 that State Street had secured its first external client for the service. State Street did not disclose the client, assets under servicing or fee terms.
Why it matters
Servicing, not issuance, is the constraint on tokenized funds reaching institutional scale. An asset manager can mint a token, but allocators will not hold it without a recognised transfer agent, a net asset value process their auditors accept, and custody arrangements that fit existing mandates. A large global custodian offering that on the same platform as its conventional business removes the operational reason to decline. The single-platform design also affects cost. If tokenized share classes can be serviced without a separate reconciliation stack, the fee premium currently attached to tokenized fund vehicles should compress toward conventional levels, which is what would make tokenized money market funds a default cash instrument rather than a specialist product.
What is not settled
State Street has not named the first client, disclosed assets under servicing, or confirmed which networks the token registers will use.
