Crypto platform theft losses fell to $75.9m across 40 incidents in June 2026, PeckShield reports

Security firm PeckShield reported $75.87m in losses from 40 crypto security incidents in June 2026, a decline of about 7% on the previous month, with an exploit of Humanity Protocol the largest single event. Trackers give materially different first-half totals, ranging from roughly $750m to $972m.

What happened

PeckShield reported on 1 July 2026 that crypto platforms lost $75.87m to hacks and exploits across 40 incidents in June 2026, down about 7% month on month. The largest single incident was an exploit of Humanity Protocol. Aggregate figures for the first half of 2026 diverge by source. One tally attributed to PeckShield puts H1 2026 losses at about $750m, while another count reports 207 incidents and $972m stolen, described as a 57% decline on the same period a year earlier. The differences reflect methodology: whether recovered funds are netted out, whether fraud and rug pulls are included alongside protocol exploits, and how bridge and exchange incidents are attributed. Bridge attacks remained a distinct category, with separate tallies counting 14 bridge incidents and around $340m in losses during 2026.

Why it matters

Loss data is the closest available proxy for the cost of economic security in onchain markets, and a falling monthly total alongside rising tokenized asset values implies improving loss rates per dollar secured. That ratio, rather than the headline dollar figure, is what determines whether institutional custody and insurance pricing can fall. The divergence between trackers is itself the story for anyone using these numbers in risk models: without a common definition of an incident or of recovered funds, published totals are not comparable across sources or across years.

What is not settled

First-half 2026 totals differ by roughly $200m between trackers, and no source publishes a reconciled methodology or a loss rate normalised by value secured.
