Luno
Retail exchange and wallet whose Nigerian arm became, on 6 July 2026, the first international exchange admitted to the Nigerian SEC's Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme; where dollar liquidity is thin and capital controls bind, a licensed venue prices the dollar as much as bitcoin.
The profile
Retail digital asset exchange and wallet founded in 2013, available in more than 40 countries and an independent operating subsidiary of Digital Currency Group; it is one of the principal venues converting local currency into crypto in South Africa and Nigeria, where it has operated since 2015. On 11 April 2024 it was among the first firms licensed by South Africa's Financial Sector Conduct Authority as a financial services provider under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, and on 6 July 2026 Luno Nigeria became the first international exchange admitted to the Nigerian SEC's Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme, opening institutional and business-to-business work including stablecoin and treasury services. In markets where dollar liquidity is thin and capital controls bind, the licensed exchange is the price-setting venue for the dollar as much as for bitcoin, which is why these authorisations carry weight beyond their compliance value.
