The profile

London-headquartered banking group that opened for business in Hong Kong in March 1865 and now runs one of the more advanced bank-operated tokenisation stacks. Its Tokenised Deposit Service converts client deposits into tokens on a private HSBC ledger for around-the-clock wallet-to-wallet transfer in EUR, GBP, HKD, SGD and USD, began in Hong Kong as the first bank-led blockchain settlement service there, and was extended to the United States on 13 April 2026; HSBC Orion has issued digital bonds including the first in the Middle East and North Africa and Hong Kong's first multi-currency digital bond. On 10 April 2026 the Hong Kong Monetary Authority granted HSBC a stablecoin issuer licence, and the bank has said it will launch an HKD-denominated token in the second half of 2026 backed by high-quality liquid assets in segregated accounts, putting deposit tokens and an issued stablecoin on the same balance sheet.
