Deutsche Bundesbank

The profile

The Deutsche Bundesbank describes itself as the independent central bank of the Federal Republic of Germany, which 'has formed part of the Eurosystem since 1999, sharing responsibility with the other national central banks and the European Central Bank for the single currency, the euro'. Eurosystem monetary policy is what it calls its core business area, with securing price stability in the euro area as its main task. Beyond that it lists national supervision of credit institutions, including a role in the European Single Supervisory Mechanism, together with cash management, payment systems and financial stability, and it manages Germany's foreign reserves, acts as the federal government's fiscal agent and carries out statistical work. It is headed by an executive board whose members are nominated in equal halves by the federal government and the Bundesrat and appointed by the German President, and it states that it is independent of instructions from third parties, including from the federal government. On this beat it is the operator of a test rather than the author of a policy. Matter Labs said on 8 September 2026 that the Bundesbank is the first institution to test and deploy Prividium, that it has done so self-hosted in its own infrastructure with smart contract and token data remaining inside its own environment, and that the two are collaborating on the platform's design and testing. The Bundesbank itself has published nothing: the newest item on its English press release index at the time of writing is dated 13 August 2026, and no speech, release or note on the deployment could be found. What the test is for, which of the bank's functions it touches and whether anything settles across it are therefore unstated by the only party with the standing to state them.

On the record

Matter Labs publishes Prividium's permissioning engine as the Bundesbank runs it

The ZKsync developer put the permissioning engine of its institutional chain platform on GitHub under Apache 2.0 and named the Deutsche Bundesbank as the first institution to deploy the platform self-hosted. The repository describes the released component as an access-control service in front of a ZKsync sequencer, with administration tooling and core banking connectors still commercial.
