Aave passes $1tn in cumulative lending volume
Aave reported cumulative lending volume above $1tn in late February 2026, the first decentralised credit protocol to reach that figure. The protocol attributed part of the growth to institutional participation, including its Horizon market for real-world asset collateral.
What happened
Aave crossed $1tn in cumulative borrowing volume since launch, a milestone reported on 26 February 2026. The figure is a cumulative flow measure, not outstanding loans, and reflects repeated borrowing and repayment against the same collateral over multiple years. The protocol linked recent growth to institutional demand and to Horizon, its market designed to accept tokenized real-world assets, including tokenized money market funds and Treasury products, as collateral for stablecoin borrowing. Aave's founder set out 2026 priorities including Aave V4, further Horizon development and a mobile application. Aave's interest rates are set algorithmically from utilisation, so the volume figure is also a statement about how much collateral has been willing to pay a floating, publicly observable rate rather than negotiate bilateral terms.
Why it matters
A trillion dollars of cumulative onchain borrowing establishes decentralised lending as a functioning credit market rather than an experiment, and it puts a public, continuously quoted rate curve alongside repo and prime brokerage. That rate is increasingly the reference against which tokenized Treasury and money market products are levered. The Horizon collateral channel is where the two halves of the field meet. If tokenized funds and Treasury products become standard collateral in decentralised credit markets, the demand for tokenization stops depending on settlement efficiency arguments and starts depending on collateral utility, which is a stronger commercial case and a harder supervisory problem.
What is not settled
Cumulative volume is not an outstanding-balance measure and no audited breakdown between institutional and retail borrowing, or of Horizon's share, has been published.
