Global bank formed on 8 October 1998 from the merger of Citicorp and Travelers Group, tracing its charter to the City Bank of New York of 1812, and running one of the largest treasury, trade and securities services franchises. Its Citi Integrated Digital Assets Platform handles issuance, transfer, custody and programmability across both public and permissioned chains, while Citi Token Services moves tokenised deposits between participating Citi branches around the clock and, in trade finance, releases payment when smart-contract conditions are met. On 11 June 2026 it launched digital depositary receipts over private company shares on SIX's regulated digital central securities depository, with Citi as both issuer and custodian and Kaleido the first name placed, and it is a founding participant in the shared tokenized deposit network being built with JPMorgan and Bank of America.

The fourth-largest US bank says corporate and commercial clients will move, program and settle funds around the clock on its own blockchain, starting with a limited dollar to pound exchange and widening through 2027.

The tokens run on the bank's own blockchain platform and the release says they carry the same deposit insurance eligibility as its existing deposit products.
